About The Railway Tavern
A fairly common name for a pub, but possibly not for one that isn’t next to a railway and never has been.
The pub opened as a freehouse in 1839, possibly trading as Framingham House.
In 1845, during railway mania, Parliament considered a new line which would link Halesworth and Norwich via Bungay and Poringland, but it failed due to a lack of funds and backers.
The pub, however, had already changed its name in anticipation of the boom times to come and in 1898, it looked like it had been a good idea.
New plans were put forward for a light railway to be called The South Norfolk Light Railway which would link Norwich with Beccles via Trowse–Poringland–Seething–Loddon–Hales–Heckingham and Gillingham.
But this plan failed too – however, The Railway Tavern in Framingham Earl kept its quirky name.

First visit to The Railway, lovely local pub in Poringland. Food was excellent, we choose the full rack of Ribs and Signature burger form the specials board. Cooked to perfection and generous portions. Home made onion rings are a must have. We will be back!

I had the beef burger and double stacked it.The food arrived pretty quickly and the portions are very generous. For dessert I had the brownie with was rich and enjoyable and was also quite large.As we were leaving the band had just started with created a nice atmosphere to chat and eat.

Came here with my partner and we enjoyed the sausages and mash in a giant Yorkshire pudding and the bacon medallions. The food was delicious and the staff were really friendly and helpful. They also managed to fit us in with only 30 minutes notice. Would highly recommend coming here as the food is great and the atmosphere is bubbly and friendly.

A Wednesday evening and not expecting too much, but yeah, I'm in the local area for a week and want to move in..... SUPERB, all aspects, order beer, a breeze and friendly staff, fantastic beer, Greene King IPA, asked to order food outside, a doddle, ordered another beer with food order, nothing, and I mean nothing is open to criticism here, staff, so friendly, and so want to please the customer.... How rare! Food, fantastic, I had gammon, chips, peas and 2x eggs and I give it 10/10, even the mayo, sauce all come in 40g 'Stokes' pouches, delicious, and certainly not those mini, tosh efforts you get everywhere else! Excellent, thank you, I'll be back....... tomorrow!!

Great service, popped in for lunch and they were really helpful with allergy-suitable food. Staff were friendly and efficient. Great atmosphere, comfortable seating, reasonably priced and welcoming for kids.
